Program Description

Assembles, installs, and repairs pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes:

Reviews building plans and working drawings to determine work required and installation sequence.

Inspects structure to identify obstructions to be avoided. Locates and marks position of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors, using ruler, spirit level, and plumb bob.

Cuts openings in walls and floors to install piping systems using hand-tools and power tools. Cuts and threads pipe, using pipe cutters, cutting torch, and pipe-threading machine. Bends pipe using using proper methods.

Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings, and pipes made from iron, steel, brass, lead, nonmetals, glass, vitrified clay, and plastic. Perform pressure tests to determine whether system is leaking.

Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners. 

Perform welding when necessary. 

Requirements or Restrictions

Minimum age qualification is 18 years old.

A high school diploma, General Educational Development (GED) equivalency or other high school equivalency credential is required.  Applicant must provide an official transcript(s) for high school and any post-high school education.  

Applicants will be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program.

All Program applicants will agree to a professional background history check.

Applicants must be able to travel with the possibility of overnight travel and must have a valid driver’s license for this purpose.
